Wall Street: New $7 billion telescope for China could create 10 times more jobs than US project
Analysts say the Wall Street Group will invest $7.5 billion in an array of new telescopes designed to study the atmospheres of exoplanets in a bid to gain a better understanding of the planets’ atmospheres.
The project is being developed by Beijing-based CNSC, which hopes the telescope will be capable of taking measurements of atmospheres from a distance of hundreds of light years.
The telescope will include two main segments: a “super-sensitive” segment capable of detecting the infrared spectrum of a planet’s surface and a “less sensitive” segment that can only detect ultraviolet.
The technology will be used to help astronomers identify exoplanet atmospheres, a field of research which was first started by former US President Barack Obama.
